The High Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN requires advanced beam diagnostics techniques to fully characterise the high energy beams. As a least-invasive technique, gas jet-based profile monitors that are capable of measuring the main HLLHC beam, as well as the primary beam in the overlap region with a hollow electron beam collimator, will be developed as part of this post. Research activities will include numerical and experimental studies at prototype setups at the Cockcroft Institute, as well as monitor commissioning at either Fermilab or CERN where you will be based for some months during the course of the project. You should have a PhD in a relevant discipline and a strong background in beam diagnostics, ideally in beam profile measurements, programming, monitor design, data analysis, accelerator control systems and machine operation, an excellent publication track record and be capable of independent work in an international environment. Knowledge of both, English and French would be advantageous. The project is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and CERN and is available until 31 March 2019.
Closing Date: 8 April 2016
